It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime previously took a six-month break that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.
Embracing Seasonal Format
While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with others alternatively covering one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for time.
It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
