Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
